Public Radio Player iPhone App

The Public Radio Player iPhone app helps your station reach your listeners wherever they go. The project is open to all public radio stations in the U.S.

To be included
, submit your station and stream information using this online form. You can add more than one stream from your organization; just submit each one separately. The higher the public radio station participation, the better this application will be!

Here’s how to join and promote the Public Radio Player:

Check to see if you're already listed

First, double-check to see if your station’s stream is already in the Public Radio Player.

Gather the necessary information

Then, gather and review the information you will need using the technical specs below.

Some things to keep in mind:

Reporting: The Public Radio Player calls your station’s Internet stream. As a result, you should be able to use your existing reporting tools to measure use of your stream through the player. The Public Radio Player and the organizations involved in the collaboration will not have access to or be able to provide reporting data specific to your station’s stream.

Bandwidth: Our goal is to make the Public Radio Player widely adopted and used. Stations should be aware that inclusion in this application may increase usage of their Internet streams. If you have concerns about being able to support additional use of your Internet stream, contact your technical contact at your station.

Legal: This application is similar to many other online Internet radio directories in which public radio stations are listed. As such, there is no required contract. However, stations do need to accept the terms included on the sign-up form in order to participate.

Submit your stream

Promote your participation in the Public Radio Player

Your iPhone presence is something to be proud of, so get the word out! Use your air and your website. If you have podcasts or online streams, promote it there, too. If you have a presence on a social network or blog, why not post an announcement? Feel free to use part or all of the announcement that was sent to stations and other public radio groups in early January.

What about future versions and new features for the Public Radio Player?
iPhone applications can develop and improve well beyond the launch date. We are planning exciting new features, such as program guides and enhanced searching, for the spring/summer of 2009. We also have plans to encourage station donations through the app in future releases. Comments on this website as well as reviews in the iTunes Store are helping to guide our plans for future releases, so feel free to add your comments. Stations do not need to resubmit their streams to be included in future updates to the Public Radio Player.
